BEHIND GLASS

ABOUT US

CREATING AT THE INTERSECTION OF ART, SCHOLARSHIP & ACTIVISM

OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES

We believe that performance art should make people think

make them ask questions, reconsider their perspectives and biases, and drive them towards action

We believe that performance art should unite

bring people together, build new communities, and foster feelings of inclusion and belonging

We wish to develop work with impact

through academic research, personal encounters, auto-ethnographic approaches and interdisciplinary exploration

We wish to develop work that communicates true stories and experiences

with honesty, integrity, and intention

We maintain that performance art can take a variety of forms

We are interested in creating across a broad spectrum of styles and genres. Our current focus is on curatorial, installation and community based work, as well as work in alternative spaces

INTERNATIONAL

WOMEN'S DAY FESTIVAL

AT THE HOPE THEATRE MARCH 21st-25th 2023

We celebrated International Women’s Day with a festival of original solo shows at the Hope Theatre in London, written and performed by women from across the country and around the globe.

From thoughtful and funny to provocative and experimental, we loved celebrating so many talented female performers.

BY THE LIGHT OF THE MOON

We find Lila, a young British woman, alone in a hospital for the criminally insane in 1928. Abandoned by her family, society, and her only friend in the asylum, she is forced to face her deepest secrets and the dark reality of the events leading up to her imprisonment.

The show presents us with questions about gender, mental health and the institutional suppression of the female voice.

Previously seen in the Hollywood Fringe Festival, off-off Broadway at the Manhattan Repertory Theatre, the Clapham Fringe Festival, the Online Fringe Festival and Garden Fringe.

Recently performed at the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe Festival with encore performances at the Old Red Lion in London.

SHE(ME): RECLAIMING SHAME

A VIRTUAL PERFORMANCE GALLERY

Shame. That uncomfortable, ugly thing that we all carry around, but rarely look closely at. We all experience it, but only rarely do we examine it, explore it and look it in the eye. So what happens if we stage it, and by doing so, reclaim it and take away its power?

6 women from across the UK and 10 hours of virtual rehearsal bring you She(me): Reclaiming Shame, an experiment in building shame resilience through devised, digital performance art. The cast confronts the unspoken and the uncomfortable with care, humor and creativity in this original new work.

Through a series of workshops the cast explored their personal relationships with shame, as it intersects with female identity.  Filmed in their homes and presented through the familiar lens of zoom, the company courageously stages their discoveries for all to see. The resulting vignettes include movement, spoken word poetry, sketch comedy and more, guiding audiences towards introspection, indignation and action.

Currently appearing in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Previously seen at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Brighton Fringe Festival, Sydney Fringe Festival and Wandsworth Fringe Festivals.

THE SONNET RESPONSE SERIES

The piece asks 154 participants to transform Shakespeare’s sonnets into personal, interdisciplinary creative acts.

In these uncertain times, the work is interested in exploring how to link individuals and communities in isolation, and how to generate creative work outside of our typical models of in-person rehearsal and collaboration.

While many artists are unsure of what the immediate future holds, this project aims to ground them in a global artistic community and encourage the creation of new work in crisis.

WHAT PARTICIPANTS SAY

"It was such a pleasure to work on this amazing project with people from all over the world. It was a process that pushed me to become active and creative in a time of turmoil and crisis, when people are beginning to feel lost and unsure of how to continue creating and exercising their craft. I felt there was great guidance and monitoring throughout the process as well as a positive atmosphere pushing everyone forward to produce their own best work. More than anything though, this whole project made me feel united with fellow artists and people everywhere in this time of isolation. I look forward to hopefully participating in many more projects to come.."

BEHIND GLASS

AN EXPLORATION OF IDENTITY

An auto-ethnographic performance work

that uses movement, spoken word poetry, soundscape and audience engagement to explore questions of identity.

Inspired by "grab her by the pussy" politics, the murder of Lyra McKee and the daily frustration of conflicting and unachievable societal expectations, the piece gives audiences an intimate glimpse into the mind of a silent woman with a lot to say.

CHOREOGRAPHY CONFINED

AN EXPLORATION OF SPACE

Choreography Confined is a Virtual Dance Composition Retreat in which participants are challenged to create movement in new ways in the virtual company of other artists.

The project is an experiment in movement, shared experiences and shifting perspectives and offers opportunities for creative exploration which works with our current limitations instead of against them.

The two week collaborative process culminated in individual dance works from each participating artist, (now streaming online), as well as a final dance film including footage from each participant.

The final film project is currently making its way around the festival circuit and will be posted in full here once it's festival run has concluded.

Watch individual participant films HERE

WHAT PARTICIPANTS SAY

"Shea is such an incredible producer, facilitator, leader, and creator. She’s someone who you can turn to with a problem, someone to bounce ideas back-and-forth with, and I happily recommend projects with her leading them. You would be in good hands."

Ivy Days

IVY DAYS

AN EXPLORATION OF CHILDHOOD MEMORY

Ivy Days is a multi-part mixed media project and temporary installation exploring how we remember pivotal childhood moments.

Each element of the piece is grounded in the recollections of my six year old self. The poem, written in the style of a nursery rhyme, the images, painted in watercolors and pulled from a sketch book- the two together, photographed both in the ivy, where the memories were made, and in polaroid to place them in the past, where they now live.

The paintings are photographed in the public space where they were temporarily displayed.
